Glamour Cover Photoshopped?

So, along with everyone else, I was excited for the June Glamour cover and I love Crystal Renn. She’s beautiful, she has fabulous curves, and she is proud of her body. So when I saw the Glamour cover, it surprised me when I had to look twice to realize that was INDEED Crystal Renn on the cover….because it certainly didn’t look like the Crystal Renn I’ve seen in many other photos.

Look at the harsh lighting, the shadows to define her stomach and breasts, the way they have her standing with her other leg obscured to “elongate” her body, and all of the text over her body as well. She doesn’t look much different from the other two models….until you see the pictures taken during the shoot that haven’t had photoshop’s graces added to them:

Look at her! She is BEAUTIFUL! She doesn’t need her thighs slimmed, her belly made to look muscular.

How can the title be: “Size 2, Size 12, Whatever!” When Glamour couldn’t even show Crystal Renn in all of her SIZE 12 glory?

Yes, Crystal Renn is ONLY a size 12 or LOWER depending on the size charts – you can google her and find her measurements everywhere: 36C-31-41, and Glamour STILL photoshopped her. I am so excited that 2010 has been the year for the plus-size girl, but is it really, when magazines still have to shave off inches and add definition to make her look like everyone else?

I really try to be excited about plus-size models entering mainstream media, but it’s hard when it seems like some magazines are just pretending to be accepting, instead of REALLY sending the message of:

“LOOK, PEOPLE ARE DIFFERENT SIZES AND STILL BEAUTIFUL AND THAT IS PERFECTLY OKAY!”

What do you think? Are you just happy that Crystal Renn is getting press? Or are you a bit disappointed as well?

I hadn’t seen that yet. Yep, they definitely “fixed” something that wasn’t broken. Shame on Glamour!

As much as I do love that the plus size world is getting more attention, it is mighty annoying that a size 12 is considered plus size. I understand, that standing next to normal ultra skinny models, a size 12 does look larger, but it would be nice to see a size 22 girl in a magazine!

I don’t like that they photoshopped her so much. I know that everything gets photoshopped these days, but seriously, they didn’t have to go so far.

She is insanely gorgeous, but I didn’t even recognize her on that cover. She looks far better in the candid shot. And I agree, I’d love to see more larger-sized plus models – the ones who are, you know, for-real plus-sized and not just model plus-sized – in magazines when they start touting how it’s ok to love your body at any size. But, baby steps I suppose.

I’m sorry, but they all look skinny to me. And were the colors added to the bikinis later? That’s kind of weird.

In any case, I think that the fashion industry is going to need some time to become comfortable with putting “fat” women on the cover of their magazines. And I disagree that 2010 is the year of the plus-size woman… I think that this is going to be the Decade of the Fatties.

    Peace,

I was pretty disappointed too. It’s a step up to have someone over a size 2 on a cover, but that they feel they need to make her look thinner is two steps down. If I didn’t recognize her face, I probably wouldn’t of even noticed that it was a ‘plus’ sized model on the cover.

They are also photoshopping the size 0 model, that’s how messed up media image is. Yeah, it’s ridiculous that size 12, an average woman’s size is “plus.” Had a friend who was a size 6 being told by movie types (she was an film extra) that THAT was too big to get work in film. A SIZE 6! So not sure why media keeps sending out mixed messages, but am sure that’s one added reason why women keep starving their bodies. The famous Kate Moss quote: “Nothing tastes as good as being skinny,” seems to sum it all up. As a cook, AND a size 12, I guess photoshop is the only way I’ll ever get a six pack.

As a model, I always have to defend the smaller plus size models. A plus size model is not always your typical size 18/20 plus size woman. A model still has to look flawless…Modeling is about portraying a fantasy image. In real life, is Crystal Renn plus size as a size 12? No, she’s just a healthy weight for her height. It’s frustrating for me. I see it both ways. I’m a size 20/22 and I’m the on the larger end of plus which means I won’t ever get as much work as Crystal.

i definitely think the over-retouched the entirety of the cover. look at how different alessandra abrosio looks!! i actually prefer crystal renn in the unretouched photo to the other two girls. she looks great. i love her stomach. you can tell she works out but just isn’t uber-tiny. love it, she’s hot.

I’m happy to hear she’s a size 12, for some reason I thought she was a size 8. Not that I care what size a woman is — I’m just glad to see plus size models that are almost plus sized!

So disappointing that they had to go and airbrush her. She’s gorgeous as-is. It makes me wonder what they would do to my body if I appeared on a magazine cover…

Did you hear she wore a Mirkin once? I crack myself up.

I actually did a double take when I initially saw this cover… it made me wonder a lot about Crystal. Had completely forgotten the candid image of her – so glad you posted it! x.

    Disappointed, but not surprised.

And that’s a mild photoshop job in comparison to some that are out there. Take a look at the one I posted to my blog. EGADS! Doesn’t excuse this instance though – as you say, she’s already beautiful without needing bits digitally shaved off her.
