Style Inspiration: My So-Called Life

Posted by on Mar 24, 2011 in Fatshion | 8 comments

I’m a bit of a Netflix junkie. For a while the only way I could fall asleep was to watch TV on my iPhone until I just passed out. I still watch TV to fall asleep, but not in such a..um..pathetic manner. (However, this does mean that I have seen every single episode of 30 Rock season 1-4, at LEAST 4 times each. Sadly, not an exaggeration in the least.) Due to my Netflix addiction, I’ve watched more television series in the past few months than I have in my entire life. I’m slightly ashamed, but also enjoying my new found love for all things SciFi and old school dramas.

Mom, Angela, and ugly mom dress

Last week, I discovered My So-Called Life was on Netflix. SCORE! I vaguely remember watching it when I was younger, but it came out when I was 9 years old, so I was roughly in 2nd grade. Anyway, I breezed through the entire series in a few days and one thing that has stuck with me is Angela’s style. Oh, the 90s! The whole time I was watching I was making mental notes of things I loved and needed to bring back into my personal style, and here’s my shortlist:

  1. Ugly Dresses – We all know I have a penchant for ugly dresses as it is. (Don’t you remember the ugly sweater dress of 2010?) But Angela in particular has some

    Check out that skirt!

amazingly ugly mom-esque dresses that I always see at Goodwill, but don’t pick up. But why not? I mean, I pretty much can rock whatever I throw on – so I’m going to stop overlooking those Mom Dresses and get a few.

  2. Vintage Florals - Angela likes to rock prints. Especially florals. And not the nice dainty florals I have from ASOS or the bold art deco prints that decorate my apartment. I mean your-grandmother’s-living-room-curtains florals. And I have to admit, I dig them. And I have some in my close that haven’t seen the light of day in some time. For a refresher, check out my Vintage Closet Reveal – you’ll see my lovely floral suit – or as I call it, my Sunday Best.
  3. Cross Body Bags – I’m pretty much out of my designer handbag phase. I’ve sold all of my Coach bags except for two (which will probably be up on eBay next week). They don’t really suit who I am anymore. I think that girl was a girl unhappy with herself and her life and buying expensive bags was an attempt to make it better. I’ve been rocking a vintage Coach bag I got for $1 at a tag sale in NH and I think it’s my favorite bag ever. And Angela rocks all these leather crossbody bags that I just LOVE. So I have been scouring eBay for a cheap vintage Coach one – I found one for $15 but I’m not sure it’s in my budget this month!

So, there you have it. Next week I’m going to try to do a MSCL OOTD (whoa, acronyms), and another TV inspired post….this time? DAWSON’S CREEK.

Have any TV shows inspired your style?

I loved My So Called Life, serisously I wanted to BE Angela Chase! I wanted her friends, her clothes, her moody pout and ofcourse Jordan Catalano (he totally looked like and acted like a lesbian in the 90s right?) Great post and it actually got me thinking about the style icons that I love from old school TV. I may have to post about this, you inspired me!

I loooove this post so much, and can’t wait to see what you create for your MSCL OOTD (Whew, that is a lot). I got really inspired by the movie Harriet The Spy when I was a kid. I wanted to wear my jackets tied around my waist and eat tomato and mayo sandwiches while spying on all of my neighbors. In high school I wanted to be Lauren Conrad (obvs. that turned out well), but now I tend to get more inspiration from bloggers than shows. I agree with Stiletto Siren, this has me really considering what shows have affected my style.

I LOVE MSCL! It’s one of my favorite shows. I love Angela Chase! She inspired my crimson glow hair, and i’ve always adored her style. I’ve even posted two of my own MSCL OOTD’s….

MSCL is totally a inspiration for me to this day. Absolutely loved that show. I still have fantasies about Jordan Catalano

MSCL and BH 90210 are my two old school shows that I love and always get inspiration from. I just brought a dress from the thrift store the other day that could totally be classified as a ugly mom dress a la Angela

MSCL was my style inspiration when I was 15! I bought cheap cheesecloth dresses for £5 off the market and wore them with lumberjack shirts and clumpy boots. I still love that look! Might embrace it this weekend!

I can’t wait to read your Dawson’s Creek post! Also, yes, One Tree Hill has inspired my style. I found a super cute color block dress that I LOVE. The top is a white tank top, it has a wide black belt and a supre cute blue mini skirt. It’s TOTALLY Brooke Davis. And I rock the hell out of it with a pair of black patent leater heels!
