I don’t need FatBooth…I AM FAT.

Looks like it is time for my FAT post of the week.

I’ve been meaning to write about this for a while, but I’ve been avoiding it. I mean, I know it’s not really going to do anything, and I should probably care about more important things, but everytime I see “Fatbooth” in the top paid apps of the week, I cringe and feel a little nauseated. I mean there is a whole iPhone app, sold to millions of people, to make them look fat. To make them LOOK LIKE ME. And it’s supposed to be funny. It’s mocks me. People like me. My community.
Candice from We Are the Real Deal sums it up the best for me,

” So when I see this app, all I see are people saying, “Ha ha ha, boy wouldn’t it suck to look like you!  But it sure is funny!”  Again, fat and age [they also have an app to age you] are some of the last acceptable things people are allowed to publicly make fun of.  My size does not exist for your amusement.  My grandmother’s age does not exist for your amusement.”

And sadly, it’s continued to be on the top of the iPhone/iPad app list since it came out. Are people this cruel? Isn’t there anything else that is FUNNY, besides making fun of fat people? And it just keeps proliferating. As Nikstar pointed out today, celebrities are jumping on the bandwagon to make fut of being fat, with Kourtney Kardashian posting a pic of her and her man.

What are your thoughts on this? Does it bother you at all? Let’s discuss.

The idea that as an actual fat person I actually look better than most of what my friends get on fatbooth makes me feel better and also makes them look at me differently. I don't think it would be racist to have an app that would show how you would look as another ethnicity… I just think you are taking offense over something trite when there are bigger issues for larger women…. I'd rather see a petition for more cute clothes in my size than one against an app.

This app is ridiculous on so many levels. I have seen a few celebs use it and I have unfollowed them after. What's even sadder in the Kardashian case is that she mentions Quicktrim etc She implies that she needs it to stay fit. I hate this family with a fiery passion.

I had not heard of this; probably b/c I'm not into apps but this is a stupid app as far as they go. It confuses me how it could be a top one. I agree with Valerie on the whole Quicktrim or whatever. Great role model.

    Bleh. It's so stupid.

  • The World is not so hostile.

It is for fun. Pure fun. It is not centralized around the mocking of the obese but rather in seeing yourself and others not as you or they are. I do not use or own this app but it is not in mal-intent or devious origin. As for the aging app, we shall all age. Did you not ever wonder what you would end up looking like? Age is acceptable to mock because ideally we shall all experience it. If there were an app what made men look like girls would it not be just as popular or funny, and yet that is not mocking women. The novelty is not in group the app changes the subject into, but rather in seeing the subject changed at all.

Wow get over it and lose some weight, you don’t have to be fat. If you’re offended be offended with your lack of self-discipline.

  • Shane

Good Lord. Get over it and quit crying about it. Whether you’d like to accept it or not, being fat is unhealthy and not conducive to good health. People who are fat shouldn’t boohoo being assimilated into society as some new minority or something – use a treadmill and start respecting your body.

This app is in pure fun. It’s a joke and I, for one (and I am clearly not alone in this), think it’s pretty hilarious. It provides someone with a look into what they might look like had they stopped giving a crap about their body’s condition and ate themselves to death. Start respecting yourself before you expect everyone else to.

I’m fat and couldn’t care less. That’s why I am on a diet u should try it. I promise u would feel better about urself.

  • Lazers

I wonder what would happen if we took a fatbooth picture of you? Would you look extra fat, or just normal? hmm..

But seriously, I believe it is only for fun. If you have a problem with being overweight and made fun of, just modify your lifestyle. I see how you may take this as offensive, but its just a silly app for pure entertainment. All in good fun.

Extra fat or just normal? This is a totally lame statement. Yes, many people may consider this app as just plain ol’ fun, but when that fun comes at the expense of others, I’m just not giggling about it. Also, she’s totally adorable, and let’s not offend her lifestyle by suggesting some modifications. Awesome, thanks. xo

    dislike.

  • Bixiecribs

I agree it is unfair to mock fat people. However, it is a fact that obesity is overwhelmingly a result of poor lifestyle choices including lack of exercise and poor diet.

Mocking fat people will not motivate them to improve their situation. It is more likely to push them into a stress response where they will overeat to cope.

Think of your health. Think of how good it feels to play sports, be naked, run, explore, bike, and swim across a lake. These are not only the rewards for losing weight but they also contribute to even more weight loss. It’s a positive feedback loop!

While you might feel comfortable being fat, being fit opens you up to a richer, more interesting life. That is the best motivation to lose weight.

  • Boombands

Just in case you come back. Heads up… lots of us fatties are actually fit and healthy. I swim every second day and run on a treadmill too. Amazingly, I don’t drink alcohol, watch what I put in my body and stopped smoking about five years ago. I can exercise for a few hours and feel great – plenty of my slim friends can’t do that and certainly aren’t interested in doing that… Being slim doesn’t actualy automatically qualify you as fit or healthy… I guess though, being an idiot, you wouldn’t realise that fat people can be fit and healthy.
Think of your stupidity and general ignorance. That is the best motivation to not discuss issues you actually don’t understand.

  • Maxtothewell

Fdsf – Being fat is not the point. Laughing at someone else’s expense is. As a parent I would never allow one of my children to mock / smirk / laugh at ANYONE due to their weight (or ANY other difference they see in someone outside of the “norm”). Your comment reflects serious immaturity and shallowness…you know…kind of like Shallow Hal…but you probably enjoyed that movie. I feel for your children. God forbid one of them turns out “chubby”…

Thank you for your comment – someone that gets it!

    Lose some fucking weight

  • Mad

I am fat and I hate when people mock me. They can go do something that involves profanity, I say.I especially hate it when people say it can be prevented and it’s your fault. Do you think we like it when people make fun of us? Do you think that if we could do something about it, we could? Do you think we want to be like this? I think this app is very offensive. I can’t believe people could get joy from that!

  • skaitlin

Wow, first of all…not every person that is overweight is that way because of a poor lifestyle. Just like not every very skinny person is anorexic. There are tons of health conditions that cause people to gain weight, or not burn calories and things like that. Honestly, I am ashamed that so many of you are so callous as to assume that something like this wouldn’t offend anyone.

If someone is overweight because of their lifestyle, then it is not our place to judge them and criticize them for that. When I see people, some of my friends unfortunately, posting pictures of themselves that they took using FatBooth, all I can think about is how many people saw that and were hurt or offended because they themselves struggle with being overweight. I don’t think most people realize how easy it is to shatter someone’s self esteem. And I wish that people would take a minute to think about who they are affecting with silly things like this, that honestly, are not necessary and don’t enrich our lives at all.

  • SaladShooter

There’s nothing wrong with an app that auto photoshops…. Its entertainment factor comes from altering your looks. Would I get offended if an african american used a “white” booth? No. Id want a “black” booth version. Awesome!! When Dave Chapelle performed his sketches as a white person, americans (many of them fat) loved it. They were thinking lol that is so me. Your offense in fat booth stems from your insecurity and displeasure in being fat (for whatever reasons). Thats why im not offended with white joke comedy.. because I am comfortable with who I am regardless. God forbid I offend gingers by dying my hair red and drawing freckles on my face…. Whiners……. Thats why america is losing its edge…..a generation of whiners with no sense of accountability for lifestyles or choices.

  • Loganhoff

Maybe make a skinny app, and then all the skinny people can bitch about a stupid problem that doesn’t even exist. The world is not here to cater to you; I am sure that there are much more offensive things that you could be writing about that would actually make a difference.

  • traceur

And people wonder why the Brits mock us. I’m glad I’m skinny!
